Half-hourly settlement: what smaller businesses need to know

Market-wide half-hourly settlement is changing how electricity use is settled, making accurate consumption data more important for business customers.

Half-hourly settlement sounds technical, but the idea is simple: electricity use is measured and settled in 30-minute periods. Large business sites have dealt with half-hourly data for years, but the wider market is now moving towards a more detailed settlement model.

The change matters because it gives suppliers and the wider electricity system a more accurate picture of when electricity is being used. Over time, that should support more flexible tariffs, more accurate cost allocation and better use of low-carbon generation.

Why the industry is changing

The old non-half-hourly model relied heavily on profiles and estimates. That made sense when most meters could not provide detailed consumption data. Smart meters and modern data systems make it possible to settle more customers using actual half-hourly consumption.

Elexon, the organisation responsible for balancing and settlement arrangements, has been rolling out the market-wide half-hourly settlement programme. The migration period is already under way, with full implementation scheduled to continue into 2027.

What it means for a business

For many smaller businesses, there may be no dramatic day-one change to the way the lights turn on or the bill arrives. The practical impact is more likely to show up in data quality, tariff design and the value of flexibility.

A business that understands when it uses electricity is in a better position to manage costs. For example, it may be able to shift some activity away from expensive periods, size solar and battery storage more accurately, or spot waste that monthly billing hides.

What to do now

  • Check whether your supplier has accurate meter and contact details for each site.
  • Keep recent bills and meter information together, especially for multi-site portfolios.
  • Ask whether your current meter can provide half-hourly or smart data.
  • Review when your business actually uses electricity, not only the monthly total.
  • Consider how solar, storage, EV charging or operational changes could alter your load profile.

Better data does not reduce a bill by itself. It helps you make better decisions about contracts, equipment and when your business uses power.

Half-hourly settlement is part of a wider shift towards a smarter electricity system. Businesses that get their data in order early will find it easier to compare offers and plan energy projects with confidence.
